The Pen is Mightier than the Sword

The Dark Void

Savage Dragon

It's a scene most can remember from their childhood. your back is pressed up against the wall and your legs bent in an uncomfortable manner. The bottom of shirts bats you lightly against the head and you're pretty sure you're sitting on top of something that was not meant to be sat on. you’re holding your breath and staring at the dark void that seems endless in front of you, when in actuality it is two inches of wood about 4 inches from your nose, listening to the pitter patter of feet running around the house in the hopes that they don't come any closer.

it was supposedly fun.

however, repeating the same event today seems to have a certain less amount of thrill now. perhaps it isn't the same without that childlike worry that you might never be found and die, the risk is gone. perhaps its the now obvious fact that despite it being so dark in here, this really isn't that good a hiding place. or maybe it's just simply the fact that despite your best efforts to fight the winless battle against time, you have gotten larger and the door is now only half an inch from your nose and you can make it out easier.

you might as well come out of the closet now.

you really can't relive your childhood.

Haha! I really like this little vignette, Savage Dragon. :-) You do an excellent job of giving the reader a false impression of what the scene is about in the first paragraph, and really rub it in with "it was supposedly fun." I like how the piece doesn't turn boring after you reveal its real subject, as the contemplations on why Hide and Go Seek is no longer fun were also interesting to read.

Thanks for sharing this snippet here. :-)
